Lung Cancer Risk at Low Doses of α Particles

چکیده
A survey of inhabitant exposures arising from the inhalation of 222Rn and 220Rn progeny, and lung cancer mortality has been carried out in two adjacent areas in Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, designated as the “high background” and the “control” area. Annual exposure rates are 0.38 working level months (WLM) per year in the high background, and 0.16 WLM/yr in the control area. In 14 yr of continuous study, from 1970 to 1983, age-adjusted mortality rates were found to be 2.7 per 105 living persons of all ages in the high background area, and 2.9 per 105 living persons in the control area. From this data, we conclude that we are unable to determine excess lung cancers over the normal fluctuations below a cumulative exposure of 15 WLM. This conclusion is supported by lung cancer mortality data from Austrian and Finnish high-background areas. A theoretical analysis of epidemiological data on human lung cancer incidence from inhaled 222Rn and 220Rn progeny, which takes into account cell killing as competitive with malignant transformation, leads to the evaluation of a risk factor which is either a linear-exponential or a quadraticexponential function of the -particle dose. Animal lung cancer data and theoretical considerations can be supplied to support either hypothesis. Thus we conclude that at our current stage of knowledge both the linear-exponential and the quadratic-exponential extrapolation to low doses seem to be equally acceptable for Rn-induced lung cancer risk, possibly suggesting a linear-quadratic transformation function with an exponential cell-killing term, or the influence of risk-modifying factors

Health Assessment Based On the Exposure of Alpha Radioactivity in Narghile Smoking
Introduction: Smokers and non-smokers are at the risk of developing lung cancer when exposed to alpha rays as a result of the relatively low levels of radium and radon that may be present in different tobacco species. There is a great interest in studies and research on the radionuclides in narghile tobacco emitting alpha particles to know the relationship between smok...
متن کاملThe Monte Carlo Assessment of Photon Organ Doses from 222Rn Progeny in Adult ORNL Phantom
Introduction The potential hazards posed by exposure to radiation from radon have been of great concern worldwide, since it is especially associated with increased risk of lung cancer. Some radioisotopes of radon progeny deposited in the human lungs emit β particles followed by the γ rays. While γ rays are comparatively less damaging to the respiratory system than α and β particles, it is the p...
متن کاملEvaluation of the dose and flux of secondary particles in the lung tissue in breast proton therapy using the Monte Carlo simulation code
Unlike proton therapy, conventional radiation therapy directs X-rays not only at the tumor but also unavoidably at nearby healthy tissue. Protons deliver radiation to tumor tissue while the healthy structures will be spared during proton therapy. When protons travel through matter, secondary particles like neutrons and photons are produced. It is believed that the secondary dose can lead to sec...
متن کاملInvestigation the potential of Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) to treat the lung cancer
Introduction: Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is recommended to treat the glioblastoma tumor. It is well known that neuron beams are more effective treatment than photon beams to treat hypoxia tumors due to interaction of neutron with nucleus and production of heavy particles such as 7Li and alpha particle. In this study to evaluate the suitability of BNCT for treating of ...
